THE EFFECTS OF SOFT DRINKS ON ORAL HEALTH
The typical American drinks 53 gallons of soda a year, and the consumption of soft drinks in the last 50 years has increased 500%. Soft drinks and sports beverages contain an average of 10 teaspoons of sugar-and the more sugar in your diet, the greater the risk of cavities and weight gain. When sugar in soft drinks is mixed with the bacteria in your mouth, acid forms. Diet soda contains its own acid. The more you're exposed to acid, the greater the risk of damage to your teeth. After having a soft drink, brush and floss. If that is not possible, rinse your mouth with water or chew sugarless gum to dilute the acid and sugar. Don't drink soda or juice before bedtime. Read the labels on your drink choices. Brush and floss, preferably twice a day. Visit your dentist for regular check-ups.
